Have you ever found a track in the mud or a scat in the trail and wondered which wild neighbor you’re sharing that stretch of woods with? Are you interested in learning the basics of wildlife tracking but not sure where to start? Join Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) for an introduction to our wildlife and how to interpret ecology through the lens of animal behavior.
This beginner friendly class will teach participants the fundamentals of tracking in a fun, supportive environment. Whether you're a hunter, a photographer, or just enjoy wild spaces and wild animals, this workshop will provide the skills to open your eyes to a hidden world of animal signs on the landscape.

We’ll wander through the foothills of the Beartooths, and discuss any tracks and sign that we find along the way. We’ll discuss the identification of tracks of some of the basic mammal groups, and dive deep into any of the interesting sign we find along the way which could include:
•Scats of mammals, birds, reptiles, etc
•Nests of mammals and birds
•Bones, feathers, and other body parts that get left behind
•Feeding sign, beds, and scent marking sign
Participants will leave with an understanding of some of the basics of track and sign identification, but more importantly they will leave with the skills of how to notice subtle sign on the land, where to look for specific animal behaviors, and which questions to ask to guide their ensuing inquiry.
No previous experience is necessary.

Please bring the following:
•Snacks and water
•Close toed shoes and long pants– we'll likely be off trail and walking over uneven terrain for the majority of the day, and ticks and rattlesnakes may be present.
•Clothing appropriate to keep you comfortable and safe for late summer weather. We’ll be in the woods and away from vehicles the whole time, so prepare for heat, cold, and rain.
•Bear spray if you have it

About BOW:
Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is a nationally recognized program and has been active in Montana since 1994. This program is designed to introduce women to different outdoor skills such as birding, fishing, hunting, shooting, orienteering, kayaking, and more. BOW provides participants with information, encouragement, and hands-on instruction.
