Join First Peoples Buffalo Jump AmeriCorps Member Alysa and Montana Office of Public Instruction Indian Education Specialist Mike Jetty for a program all about tipis. Junior rangers will learn why the markings and symbols painted on a tipi were so meaningful and how they shared stories about family, identity, and the natural world. Each tribal nation has its own unique cultural traditions regarding tipi designs and some tribes like the Crow traditionally don’t paint their lodges. Kids will get to design and create their own miniature tipi, using traditional shapes and imagining their own meaningful symbols. To finish, we’ll work together to raise a real tipi and discover how its structure, materials, and engineering made it such an effective and adaptable home.
